Ignition Interlock System

Have you been court-ordered to install an

Ignition interlock system in your vehicle?

Under Texas DWI Law, Ignition Interlock Devices will be required for certain DWI defendants with prior convictions or license suspensions on their record.  Employees who must drive a company car in the scope of their employment may operate an employer-owned vehicle so long as the employer is notified of the Ignition Interlock Device requirement and proof of notification is kept in the vehicle. The ignition interlock device statute requires that a device be installed on all vehicles the DWI offender owns and operates on a regular basis. The device MUST be installed for the requisite time period, or the DWI offender’s driving privileges will not be reinstated. The devices are installed at designated ignition interlock service centers. The DWI offender is responsible to pay the cost of installation, as well as the monthly payments. Offenders who are unable to afford it may petition the court to work out an alternative payment schedule.

The device will be installed on the vehicle and will remain there for the entire time it is required. Any person who wishes to operate the vehicle must use the device in order to start it. Random breath samples are required periodically while the car is in motion to   prevent a sober friend from starting the vehicle. Failure to provide a sample or a sample over the requisite BAC level will result in the sounding of alarms.  If it is unsafe to provide the sample while driving, the driver will be given enough time to safely maneuver off the roadway to blow into the device before the alarm will sound. The device will never immobilize the vehicle when moving, so that accidents may be prevented.

These devices are designed to prevent any tampering. Attempts to tamper or circumvent the device will result in imposition of further penalties.

Who Benefits From Car Breathalyzers?

All DWI offenders have the potential to benefit from the use of the  ignition interlock system—its installation allows offenders to maintain their responsibilities while also reminding them that their behavior has a direct impact on their right to drive. Court systems and motor vehicle administrations agree that car breathalyzers are valuable tools because they deter individuals from driving while intoxicated while the devices are installed. Additionally, when ignition interlock systems are required as a provision of probation or parole, the threat of doing jail time better ensures that DWI offenders will correctly use their car breathalyzer each and every time they get behind the wheel

Not only the general public benefits from an ignition interlock system. DWI offenders benefit as well. Their lives, and those of family members who share the use of the car, can remain relatively undisrupted—individuals can go to work, pick up children, run errand, etc.
